While searching for something else (can't tell you - it's top secret :-) I came across this blog, which could quickly become my new Bible. Absolutely incredible amount of information on using acorns as food... and on natural, real food in general.

Best alternative method of leaching acorns: Hanging them in a sack in the flush tank of your toilet. Whenever it is flushed, more tannins are leached out. Like Hank says, I'll stick with boiling them.
